President Donald Trump may find himself in the rough with many Americans over his latest golf boast, CNN political commentator Jamal Simmons said on Monday. (Watch the video below.)
Trump, 80, bragged on Truth Social that he won a senior championship at his Bedminster, New Jersey, club over the weekend with an eyebrow-raising round of 70. “It’s called TALENT,” he wrote. “And I have it, and they don’t!”
CNN host Brianna Keilar called attention to the latest of his unbelievable feats on the course by the so-called “Commander in Cheat.” She noted he was taking a “victory lap” despite an ongoing war with Iran “that has no immediate foreseeable end” and “economic woes.”
“Is this when he should be championing his golf championship?” she asked.
“I’m trying to compose myself because it’s a little embarrassing to have the leader of the country spend his time doing this,” Simmons replied. “Look, for average Americans, we see that personal savings are going down. We see the credit card delinquencies are going up. Gas is back up over $4 a gallon. And here they have the president of the United States spending his time talking about what’s happening in a golf tournament that he may or may not have won, because we don’t know. Because sometimes the president doesn’t tell the truth about things.”
Wait, is Simmons saying that Trump fudges golf scores and that others sometimes do it for him? Nooooooo.
The former Kamala Harris comms director delved into the optics.
“We just don’t know how the American public is gonna look at this and say, ‘This president is focused on our concerns, our agenda.’ Instead, this guy seems to be focused on his own golf game,” he added.
“It is a good chip shot,” Keilar allowed of a highlight Trump posted. “That is the fact-check on that.”
