There are so many compelling reasons for having a pergola. It will enhance your outdoor space and create a stunning focal point that will look good and provide a highly practical solution for spending time outside, or dining al fresco on a regular basis.

Having a wonderful custom pergola will often add value to your home, in addition to giving you the ability to make the most of outdoor living.

There will be occasions when you need to perform a bit of routine maintenance on your pergola. Of course, if you have an aluminum pergola, for instance, that will stand up to the elements more robustly than a wooden structure. Either way, here’s some practical tips to consider.

    Carry out a thorough inspection

It’s always a good idea to inspect your pergola regularly to see if there is anything that needs fixing or replacing. If you are contemplating any repair work or routine maintenance, a good starting point would be to inspect the structure from the bottom up, making notes as you go as to what needs sorting.

Make sure you have all the tools needed

It can be hugely time-consuming and frustrating to get halfway through a repair, only to find you don’t have all the tools and other items needed to finish the job.

Prepare yourself by gathering together all of the required tools and materials necessary.

    Take away any damaged components

The next step in the repair process will be to remove any components that are damaged and need to be replaced. If you have a wooden pergola, this will involve safely sawing away any rotting parts that need replacing.

    Replacing components

Once you have safely removed all the damaged parts of the pergola you can move on to replacing these items. Make sure they are securely fitted and you have followed any manufacturer’s installation recommendations.

Check for loose screws and fastenings

Next on your list, you need to work your way around the pergola, checking for any loose screws or fastenings that need tightening up.

If you find that any screws or components are damaged or rusted, these should be replaced.

    Sanding and smoothing

If you have a wooden pergola and have had to replace some parts of the structure with fresh wood, you will need to ensure that everything looks neat and tidy again by sanding and smoothing the area.

Time to add your stain or paint

Again, if you have a wooden pergola, you will need to periodically give it a fresh coat of stain or paint. This will keep it looking nice and help preserve the wood from the elements.

    Time to inspect your work

Once you have finished all of your repair and maintenance steps, it’s time to inspect the structure to confirm that it is stable and safe to use.

Make a further check of joints and screws to confirm everything is in order.

Set an agenda for future maintenance

It’s a good idea to set a reminder to check your pergola again in about six months. Two inspections a year should be sufficient to help you maintain its looks and integrity.

You can follow these steps to keep your pergola in good order. Another option to consider would be to invest in an aluminum pergola, so that you don’t have the same maintenance issues to worry about.
