The newspaper’s conservative editorial board criticized Trump’s push for Senate Republicans to abandon the long-standing “blue slip” tradition, which allows a home state senator to block a district court judge or U.S. attorney nominee.
Trump has slammed the process following the removal of his former personal attorney Alina Habba as the acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey.
“The worry is that such machinations might become routine to evade Senate confirmation,” the board wrote.

“The blue-slip tradition serves Republicans when they’re out of power, and it tends to encourage Presidents to pick qualified and scrupulous lawyers for these posts,” the editorial continued. “By trying to circumvent it, including his maneuvers for Ms. Habba and his demands for recess appointments, Mr. Trump is setting a precedent that could come back to bite Republicans.”
