Here’s the thing about the first week of November: the clocks just fell back on Sunday, and by Monday the sun is clocking out before you do. Your day suddenly has a lot more evening in it. Leave work, it’s dark. Grab a drink, dark. Walk the dog, dark. Weekends don’t get a pass either: a Saturday that starts with a late breakfast is over by the time you’ve run two errands.
So you want an outfit that handles all of it, weeknight or weekend, without a costume change. This one pulls a trick from the trading floor: the pinstripe, lifted off a suit and put on a shirt jacket. Underneath, a black hoodie knit from yak wool (yes, yak), a dark brown tee, stone cords, and suede chukkas that will go wherever the night does.

Some shirt jackets can lean hard into the weekend chores the style implies. This overshirt avoids that by giving the stripe some texture, which refines the whole thing. Put it on at the first cold snap and keep it on until opening day.

Yak is cashmere’s cousin from the mountains, and you can tell. Quince’s yak runs 19.5 to 20.5 microns, and good cashmere usually comes in under 19, so this one feels a touch drier and less slinky, though it’s still softer than most of the wool in your closet.
In exchange you get a lot of warmth for the weight plus less pilling than bargain cashmere, which starts balling up if you wear it longer than one winter.

The thin, clingy tee has mostly had its run. Now the look is something heftier, soft, maybe a little worn in. Uniqlo U’s crew neck is one of the most reliable ways to get there for the money: thick cotton that holds its shape wash after wash, for $25. In dark brown it peeks out under the black hoodie and ties into the boots.
The Boots

The Scout is Thursday’s take on the classic chukka, and the details are what set it apart. The rubber outsole has small studs for grip, so it’s not as slippery as the old crepe-sole desert boots. Inside, it’s lined in glove leather with a leather midsole that shapes to your foot over time, and the stitched construction means a cobbler can keep them in action with a resole.
The treated WeatherSafe suede is the best of both worlds. It looks dressy but isn’t precious, which makes it the easy go-to boot whenever you want to look put together without overdoing it.
The Cords

Somewhere along the way, corduroy became the official pant of the tenured New England professor. We say let him keep the elbow patches and hand over the cords.
In stone, they’re the most useful pants you can pull on between Labor Day and New Year’s, light enough to stop a stack of dark layers from turning into one big shadow.
Better still, a narrow wale is technically a stripe made of texture instead of lines, so it repeats the overshirt’s stripe at a smaller scale and leaves the top in charge. Curious why that works?
The Belt

In most light it reads brown, but it’s actually a dark olive suede. That keeps it from looking like an exact match for the boots while still sitting in the same family. It’s the same weather-treated suede as the Scout, with hand-stitched edges and a square silver buckle. At just over an inch wide, it works with cords, chinos, and jeans.

Everything else in this Getup runs warm. The socks are the lone counterpoint, a heathered blue that stays out of sight until you take a seat and your cuffs ride up or you show up to a shoes-off house. Little moves like that change the feel of the outfit as the day goes on.

Class Without the Cost

Timex’s Marlin goes back to the 1950s, and this chronograph leans all the way into the ’60s look. It has a champagne dial with gold-tone hands, black sub-dials, and blocky retro numerals at 12, 3, and 9. That warm dial picks up the stone cords and the mocha boots. It’s quartz, and at 40mm with a domed acrylic crystal, it wears like a vintage piece without the vintage repair bills.
