House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Saturday dropped a cartoonishly false claim about Donald Trump while praising him following the president’s update on talks to end his unpopular Iran war.
“President Trump is the ONLY one who could have gotten Iran — the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism — to the negotiating table,” Johnson wrote in a post on his X account.
“We are greatly encouraged to learn a PEACE DEAL in Iran is underway — and look forward to learning more about the specifics. Under President Trump’s leadership, our nation is stronger, more respected on the global stage, and safer than ever before.”
Earlier in the day, Trump announced that a “PEACE” deal with Iran has been “largely negotiated” following a call with several world leaders. He added that the details of the deal, which he wrote was “subject to finalization,” would be announced “shortly” and it would include the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Of course, Trump isn’t the “ONLY one” to negotiate with Iran, and contributors to the Elon Musk-led platform didn’t neglect reality when swooping in to hit Johnson’s post with a brutal community note.
“Obama and other world leaders have been able to get Iran to the negotiation table,” the note accurately pointed out alongside a link to the U.S. State Department’s summary of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (also called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) under then-President Barack Obama.
Critics on X swiftly ripped the House speaker over his claim — including the MeidasTouch Network, which simply labeled it “embarrassing.”
And the X account Republicans Against Trump weighed in on the post, writing, “I had to double check this wasn’t a parody account. My God.”
