CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten has highlighted two polling trends that could spell serious trouble for Donald Trump and the GOP ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
White, non-college voters “were the heartbeat of President Trump’s three presidential campaigns and, right now, the heartland is ripping the heart out of Donald Trump’s presidency,” Enten said on Tuesday’s broadcast of “CNN This Morning.”
Enten noted that Trump enjoyed a 25-point advantage over Democratic rival Kamala Harris among the group ahead of the 2024 election, but is now “in the negative,” with a net approval rating of -2 points.
“He’s in the negative territory with a group of voters that fueled his three presidential bids and allowed him to win a second term in the White House back in 2024,” Enten said. “We’re talking a drop here with the key core group of Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns, of 27 points away from the president of the United States. No wonder he’s so low.”
Trump has “always been reliant” on the group and “now even they have turned on him,” he added.
Enten then turned to inflation, which he said was “the key reason why Donald Trump won a second term in the White House.”
Trump’s net approval rating on the issue among white, non-college voters has sunk from +24 points in 2024 to -39 points now.
“Oh my. Oh my goodness gracious,” Enten said. “That’s a change of 63 points in the wrong direction, on the key issue that got Donald Trump reelected to a second term, among the key group that got him reelected.”
