Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume argued on Monday that Donald Trump’s hitting hard of the campaign trail ahead of the 2026 midterm elections appears to be having little effect.
On Monday’s broadcast of “Special Report With Bret Baier,” Hume noted how “sometimes in the course of a campaign … you will see a candidate or a party that’s trailing in the polls begin to catch some momentum.”
“They hit on an issue, or an event turns public opinion in their favor,” he continued.
But Hume added: “I haven’t seen that yet.”
Although Trump “has been out campaigning vigorously,” Hume said he is “not sure it’s making any difference, and what difference it makes, I’m not sure is helping.”
Trump is currently suffering from record-low approval ratings.
The veteran Fox News analyst pointed to several recent episodes he suggested have done little to help Trump or GOP candidates, such as the president’s attacks on Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico as “Talafreako.”
Talarico does not appear to be a “freak” and instead “seems mild-mannered, he seems pleasant, he’s not an unattractive candidate, whether you agree with him or not,” said Hume.
He also cited what he described as Trump’s “cuddling-up to” Russian President Vladimir Putin, his apparent “turning his back” on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the “fiasco” surrounding Katie Zacharia’s extremely short-lived tenure as White House press secretary.
“I don’t see this White House and this campaigning by the president as having made much headway so far of the kind that you can sort of see just watching the campaigning,” said Hume.
