Fan-Favorite Wailulu Lounge at Poly’s Island Tower Refurbishment From Now to June 2026

When it comes to Walt Disney World restaurants that we’ll revisit again and again, Wailulu Bar & Grill in the Island Tower is our new #1 personal favorite family-friendly lounge. Which is precisely why we wanted to drop in with a quick “heads up” that this dining hotspot will soon start a refurbishment (presumably unplanned?) that’s slated to run through June 2026.

Wailulu Bar & Grill gets its name from the Hawaiian words wai and lulu. Fittingly, this calm waterfront restaurant boasts breathtaking views of the Seven Seas Lagoon and Magic Kingdom off in the distance. You can see Cinderella Castle and boat traffic along the water, and hear the train whistle off in the distance.

If you dine here at the right time, the lounge offers prime views of the Happily Ever After fireworks and Electrical Water Pageant. Wailulu also benefits from a cool breeze coming off the water, and the height of the hideous Island Tower blocks out the late afternoon sun. Paradoxically, the resort it calls home is the antithesis of what makes Disney, Disney; meanwhile, the lounge epitomizes the magic of the Vacation Kingdom.

We would always strongly recommend doing dinner at Wailulu Bar & Grill for the above-mentioned reasons, but it soon might be mandatory. That’s because there’s a refurbishment starting ASAP that’s going to take a sit-down lunch off the table (maybe). Here’s the warning that Walt Disney World has posted:

From April 23 through late June, updates will be made to the exterior roofing at Wailulu Bar & Grill in the Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Wailulu Bar & Grill will remain open for service during the work. Each day from open until 5 p.m., the bar will offer walk-up service only, and seating will be unavailable. Seating will resume from 5 p.m. to close. While construction activity will be noticeable during daytime hours, efforts will be made to minimize disruptions.

We’ve already heard from a couple of confused guests about this, so let’s break down what we think is impacted…

As you might recall, Wailulu Bar & Grill began offering Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) back in December. Walk-Up Waitlist will still be available, as it is for every restaurant, but reservations are highly recommended.

Wailulu Bar & Grill is among the most popular ADRs at Walt Disney World, and Walk-Up Waitlist might be disabled when demand is high (as is the case for other popular restaurants).

To this point, there is only one (1) date in the next 60 that’s currently offering ADRs for a party of 1 or 2. This is almost certainly artificial throttling, but that’s a different topic for a different post.

For our purposes, I can switch to a party of 3 and–like magic–there’s wide open availability in April, May and early June 2026. “Funny” how that works. (Just downright hilarious–right, solo travelers and couples?!)

This is relevant because, at present, there are tons of time slots (for a party of 3) available at Wailulu Bar & Grill before 5 pm (in fact, it is mostly ADRs before 5 pm) between now and early June 2026. Take a look:

    Demo

No matter what date range I search, there are options for lunch at Wailulu Bar & Grill. That doesn’t make sense if the location won’t be seating guests and is walk-up only.

It’s possible that this is an error. That this is truly unplanned maintenance (and I assume it is since Island Tower is still pretty new and shouldn’t need routine maintenance already), and the ADR system hasn’t yet been updated to reflect scheduling.

But go back and read the bulletin again. It specifically mentions the bar being unavailable for seating, and not the “And Grill.” This is needlessly confusing, especially since Disney mostly refers to Wailulu as a singular location (Wailulu Bar & Grill as opposed to Wailulu Bar…and Wailulu Grill), but that’s my theory. That the bar, which is always walk-up, is all that’s impacted. The “And Grill” will operate as normal, with seating and ADRs throughout the day.

Of course, this theory could very well be wrong. Wailulu Bar and Wailulu Grill are both under the same roof, at least when it comes to the outdoor seating. They’re literally separated by like 10 feet, so it would be curious if one is impacted but the other isn’t.

Another possibility is that Wailulu Bar & Grill only fills a certain number of tables per day via ADRs, with the rest set aside for Walk-Up Waitlist, and that number can be accommodated by the indoor seating (perhaps there should be a third name for this: Wailulu Dining Room).

Wailulu having indoor-only seating for lunch from now through June 2026 is also plausible, and makes all of the above easier to reconcile since the indoor dining room has its own roof.

A final wildcard that we cannot completely ruled out is that this warning was posted for the wrong restaurant. As you might’ve read recently in New Closures & Construction Alerts at Polynesian Village Resort, there’s a lot of work being done around the Great Ceremonial House at the Poly.

Wailulu isn’t anywhere near that–it’s in the new Island Tower–but it’s possible someone messed that up. I’m skeptical of that–the refurbishment warning has a bit too much specificity for that (and in a way that differs from the Poly bulletins), but it wouldn’t be the first, second, or thirtieth time one of these notices was wrong. We cannot rule out anything at this point.

The best way to not worry about any of this is by simply doing what we’ve recommended since the beginning: making a sunset Advance Dining Reservation for Wailulu Bar & Grill, sitting outside, and enjoying day turn to night over the Seven Seas Lagoon and Magic Kingdom. That is the optimal way of enjoying Wailulu Bar and/or Wailulu Grill. And it’s also the way renders all of the above moot, because sunset is after 5 pm between now and June.

We love Wailulu Bar & Grill so much that we’ve actually added it to our List of the 26 Best Restaurants at Walt Disney World in 2026. Since addition doesn’t occur without subtraction, we made the potentially controversial decision to bump California Grill from this list in favor of Wailulu Grill!

Like California Grill, this restaurant boasts breathtaking views (see above) and unrivaled atmosphere. Both also have “Grill” in the name and are located along the monorail loop. In just about every other way, the two grills are different.

Unlike California Grill, the menu at Wailulu Grill offers great value for money and the food is consistently delicious. No, it’s not fine dining, but then again, California Grill arguably isn’t either–even if it rests on its reputation as such. Wailulu Bar & Grill earns an easy and enthusiastic recommendation for being an excellent and affordable family-friendly option.

Wailulu Grill is yet another game-changer for Walt Disney World, belonging at or near the top of lists for best fireworks views, best bars & lounges, best burgers, best atmosphere, and more. This whole post about the refurbishment ‘warning’ might be a thinly-veiled excuse to post about Wailulu again, doing the important (and selfless!) public service of bringing this great spot to your attention, and (here comes the selfish part) justifying our future meals at Wailulu Grill.
