Picture a career shaped by historic moments, trusted relationships in New York City’s media scene, and a curiosity-driven approach to change. Through his television show Positively America, veteran broadcaster Ernie Anastos shares uplifting stories of everyday people, inspiring viewers across generations. In this second chapter of his career, he reflects on the role of influential figures—both personal role models and media icons like Walter Cronkite—who have shaped his journey. His desire to share positive stories extends beyond television; he also hosts the podcast Positively Ernie: The Podcast.

Anastos is passionate about connecting with younger generations through his show Positively America. He says, “In my experience speaking to young people at schools and college campuses, there’s a strong need for hope and faith in good news. We need to reward positive behavior and recognize the good things happening in our communities, country, and world.”

He also reflects on the evolving role of technology and social media, recognizing both its benefits and drawbacks. “As a journalist,” he explains, “my career has been dedicated to sharing stories and bearing witness to history. Growing up in a simpler time, with just three networks and limited news, the explosion of media outlets in the Information Age has been both exciting and worrying. The concern is that anything can be abused.

He observes, “We need to take responsibility for the value of information we share and how it impacts public opinion and behavior—I’m talking about disinformation, rumors, false facts, and irresponsible reporting.”

Anastos also observes that social media has the potential to connect generations, stating, “I believe it’s all about respect and understanding. When we open our minds to others’ opinions and ideas with genuine respect, we’re connecting the dots across generations.”

Anastos also shared his views on the misuse of technology, noting that while advancements in broadcasting technology benefit television viewers, they should be used responsibly. He said, “ My whole life as a reporter has been based on sharing stories and being a witness to events in history. I love what I do. I can benefit from a perspective of growing up in a time when things were much simpler. In the media, we only had three networks and a limited amount of news reporting. Today, the Information Age has grown far beyond any expectations that I had. In many ways, I’m excited about it, in other ways, it worries me. The reason for that is because anything can be abused. We need to take responsibility for recognizing the value of the information we are disseminating to the public and how we are reporting stories that impact public opinions and behavior. I am talking about disinformation, rumors, false facts, and other irresponsible actions.”

Mr. Ernie Anastos understands the importance of creating an appealing, moving, and effective call to action that inspires our readers and viewers to make positive changes in their communities. When I asked him, “What do you think are the essential elements of a call to action?” he responded, “The most important element is something that makes sense. People need to recognize that any call to action must be rooted in common sense and honesty. That’s usually not hard to spot. When we’re intelligent and sensitive to real problems, offering solutions that make sense, we have a better chance to create meaningful change.”

Mr. Anastos has always aspired to be a journalist. He shares, “I loved being in the media from the time I was 10 years old. I enjoyed reading newspapers and being part of a current events club in school. I built a little radio station in my basement when I was 13 and landed a real job at a local radio station at 16. I’ve been on the air since, including during my college years and throughout my life. I feel that my mission is to be an ambassador of goodwill and to help improve people’s lives. My gift and purpose is to serve as an instrument of positive thinking. I choose to inform, educate, engage, and inspire people through my unique role in the media.”

He also recognizes the unique opportunities of being part of New York City’s media scene—the media capital of the world. He reflects, “New York City is the media capital of the world, representing the most diverse culture. I’ve been honored to witness history in many ways. I love the neighborhoods and the people who make this city so unique. In the world of news, I’ve seen the best and worst of human behavior. Some of the varied stories I’ve covered include the COVID pandemic, September 11th, the death of John Lennon, Papal visits, the marathon, and other citywide celebrations. I consider myself fortunate to have been on the air for so many years. When I walk the streets of New York, in any borough, friendly faces greet me. I like that people feel comfortable approaching me and sharing their expressions of friendship and appreciation. Trust is a big part of my job. Integrity is at the heart of my work. When people believe my reporting is fair and accurate, then I’ve done my job.”

His nationally syndicated show, Positively America, resonates deeply with viewers due to its message of hope. Anastos explained, “My weekly, 30-minute program, Positively America, is seen on more than 200 TV stations nationwide, including WPIX TV in New York. It’s a unique, purposeful talk program covering a wide variety of subjects, including today’s social issues, education, family, technology, new trends, and lifestyle.

One of my programs sparked a lively discussion about a person’s legacy: What is your life all about? What is your sense of purpose, and how do you give back? I believe this topic is especially important in today’s world. Many of us are caught up in social media—spending too much time posting photos, seeking likes, and counting followers. I think we need to look deeper into the meaning of life: why we’re here and what we do with the gifts we’ve been given.”

He gives other examples, “ In addition to fostering discussions on such meaningful topics, I also highlight positive news stories from across the country, providing an opportunity to reward and celebrate good behavior. From talking to people on the street about current issues to offering my personal message and call to action at the end of each episode, the show explores themes like the American dream, patriotism, freedom, family, love, leadership, and more.”

Anastos is an established book author as well. He shared, “I have authored two books focusing on youth. My first book was called Twixt: Teens Yesterday and Today. It’s all about the history of youth in America, including lifestyle, fashion, fads, education and more. It highlights the political and social influence that young people have had in our American history. The second book, called Ernie & the Big News is a story about the adventures of a TV reporter. It’s about my life starting out as a young boy and coming to work in the number one TV market in America. It’s filled with positive stories and an uplifting message asking young people to try to make the world a better place. We have given away thousands of books to school children in the New York City middle school system. One of my favorite quotations that I share with people everywhere is this one. “Don’t go where the path may lead, go where there is no path and leave a trail.”

While many aspects of the media industry have evolved, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence, Ernie Anastos emphasizes the importance of progress: “I believe progress is essential in life. We must embrace changes that enhance our world and what we leave behind. Artificial intelligence is making a significant impact globally.”

Mr. Anastos also reflects on the evolving role of technology and social media, acknowledging both their potential and pitfalls. “My whole life as a reporter has been based on sharing stories and witnessing events in history. I love what I do, and I benefit from having grown up in a time when things were simpler. Back then, we only had three networks and limited news reporting. Today, the Information Age has expanded far beyond anything I imagined. In many ways, I’m excited about it, but in others, I’m worried because anything can be abused. We need to take responsibility for recognizing the value of the information we share and how it impacts public opinion and behavior.”

He also believes that social media, when used responsibly, can connect generations. “It’s all about respect and understanding. When we open our minds to others’ opinions with genuine respect, we’re connecting the dots across generations.”

Anastos stresses that the human element remains the most crucial factor in everything we do. “I hope technology will be used responsibly to generate positive outcomes across all aspects of life. But ultimately, the human touch and our natural creative talents serve the greatest purpose. I am committed to protecting this golden opportunity, ensuring everyone has the freedom and enthusiasm to excel and contribute positively to society.”

Continuing to amplify the positive aspects of news reporting, Anastos says, “I believe my mission is to be a conduit, sharing information to help people understand the value of creating fair and balanced news reporting.”

As he looks to the future, Anastos is determined to continue fostering positive change: “In all my years as a journalist, this is one of the most divisive times I’ve witnessed. The more we share our humanity and common interests, the closer we get to a better understanding and a more peaceful environment. Harmony is a good word. It’s missing in life in so many ways, and I’m hoping to improve that.”

Thank you, Mr. Anastos, for sharing your inspiring journey with Social The Lifestyle Magazine. Your commitment to uplifting journalism and connecting generations through meaningful stories leaves a lasting legacy of hope and integrity. Readers, explore his books and programming to witness how positive messaging continues to shape our world.
