Why Now Is a Bad Time to Buy an iPad or MacBook Air

Apple is rumored to be planning to launch new iPads and a refreshed MacBook Air in March 2024. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported this back in January and now MacRumors has new details that further hint at the impending launch. The MacRumors report by Joe Rossignol cites an unnamed source who confirmed that an internal Apple document about “unannounced or unreleased products” has been updated.

This could mean that Apple is gearing up for a late March 2024 launch for its upcoming iPads and MacBook Air, but it doesn’t yet confirm it outright. The timing of Apple’s internal updates point to an upcoming product launch. There’s a good chance that Apple may not even release a pre-recorded video presentation to introduce its new products in March 2024: The company could just issue a few press releases and refresh the lineup on its website.

For you, this means that it’s a good idea to put any thoughts of buying a new iPad or MacBook Air on hold until Apple makes these announcements. Not only are you more likely to get a much-upgraded device if you wait, but you’re also more likely to score a good deal on outgoing models.

These are the devices Apple could launch in March 2024:

    The M3 MacBook Air

Apple’s M3 processor was released in October 2023 with the refreshed MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air (13- and 15-inch models) are expected to be updated with this processor in the March 2024 update. The new processor offers improved performance and retains excellent battery life—and that should be reason enough for people to wait before buying a MacBook Air. It’s going to be pricier than the base M1 MacBook Air, but for many people the jump from an M1 to an M3 processor could be worth the extra cash.

    A new iPad Air

It has been two years since Apple launched the fifth-generation iPad Air with the M1 processor. This product is overdue for an update and it’s likely to be upgraded to the M2 chip, which offers better performance. Other than this, you can expect minor feature updates but probably not a total redesign.

    Upgraded iPad Pro

According to the rumor mill, Apple could launch refreshed iPad Pro models with OLED displays. Both the 11- and the 13-inch models are expected to get this update, nearly a year and a half since the last time an iPad Pro was refreshed.
