How to Send Wine as a Gift: Shipping Rules and Tips

The easiest way to send wine as a gift is to order from a licensed online wine shop or winery that’s authorized to ship to your recipient’s address. USPS doesn’t accept wine shipments, and UPS and FedEx don’t accept them from individual consumers. Someone 21 or older has to sign for delivery. Confirm the address, choose a delivery date, add a gift note, and you’re set.

Sending wine sounds simple until you’re standing at the shipping counter and get turned away. Alcohol shipping in the U.S. is regulated state by state, and the rules surprise a lot of people every holiday season. This guide walks you through what’s allowed, how to get the timing right, and the easiest ways to make sure your gift arrives.

Quick answer: how to send wine as a gift

    • Order from a licensed seller authorized to ship to your recipient’s address
    • Skip USPS. Wine is nonmailable, and UPS and FedEx don’t take wine from individuals
    • Check the state. Rules vary, and a few states block most or all wine deliveries
    • Plan for a signature from someone 21 or older
    • Order early. For the holidays, late November to early December is a safe planning target
    • Short on time? An e-gift card is delivered by email

How to send wine as a gift with Champagne, Chablis, Brunello, and Napa Cabernet bottles in front of wrapped holiday gift boxes Ordering from a licensed wine shop is the easiest way to get bottles like these to someone you love.

Can you ship wine as a gift?

Yes, but not the way you’d ship most gifts. The rules come from two places: federal law covers the Postal Service, and private carriers set their own policies on top of state alcohol laws. In practice, that means wine has to ship from a properly licensed seller, like an online wine retailer, a winery, or a wine club. You can’t box up a bottle from your own wine rack and drop it off.

So the real question isn’t how to ship wine. It’s who you buy it from.

Ways to send wine as a gift, compared

Ship it yourself (UPS or FedEx)NoCarriers only accept wine from licensed shippers
Mail it (USPS)NoAlcoholic beverages are nonmailable

Which states can you ship wine to?

Every state sets its own alcohol shipping rules, a power left to the states after Prohibition ended. Most states allow wine to be shipped to adult consumers, but the details change depending on whether the seller is a winery or a retailer.

    • Utah bans direct-to-consumer wine shipping altogether, according to the consumer group Free the Grapes.
    • Some states allow wineries to ship but restrict retailers, or cap how much wine one household can receive per year.
    • Rules change. States update their laws regularly, so check before you order. Wineries can see state-by-state status from the Wine Institute.

The simplest approach is to enter your recipient’s shipping address before you choose the wine, then review any state-specific terms. Each seller has its own list. For example, Wine Access ships wine to 45 states plus Washington, D.C., but not to Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, Mississippi, or Utah, and a few states carry extra terms. It only shows wines available for the state you’re shipping to and flags any bottle that can’t go to a new address at checkout. You can check any state on the Wine Access shipping map.

Tip: If one seller can’t ship to your recipient’s state, another might. Winery and retailer rules differ, so a winery may be able to ship where a retailer can’t, or the reverse. It depends on the state and the seller’s permits.

How to send wine as a gift, step by step

    1

Confirm the seller ships to their state

Check the seller’s shipping list before you fall in love with a bottle. It saves you a canceled order later.

    2

    Choose the wine

Match it to the person and the occasion. Champagne for celebrations, Pinot Noir for the holiday table, a big Napa Cabernet for the boss. Our guide to the best wine for gift giving breaks it down by recipient.

    3

    Pick the right delivery address

Choose an address where someone 21 or older will be there to sign. A staffed workplace can be convenient if it accepts personal alcohol deliveries.

    4

    Set a delivery date

Many wine shops let you choose when the gift arrives. Pick a day you know someone will be there, and avoid weekends unless the seller confirms weekend delivery.

    5

    Add a gift note

Say why you chose that bottle and what to eat with it. A personal line turns a box of wine into a real gift.

    6

    Give them a heads-up

Without spoiling the surprise, let them know a package needing a signature is on the way. A missed signature is one of the easiest ways for a wine gift to get delayed.

Who has to sign for a wine delivery?

Someone 21 or older has to sign for wine shipped through UPS and FedEx, and the carrier can ask for ID. FedEx requires the signer to show a valid government-issued photo ID, and UPS treats a package as undeliverable if the recipient is under 21 or can’t show proper ID. Wine Access says a 21-plus signature is required without exception. A note on the door won’t work.

    • Missed delivery? Carriers may try again, reroute the package, or send it back to the seller. UPS and FedEx also offer some pickup options, but not every pickup location accepts alcohol.
    • Workplaces can be convenient when someone 21 or older is there to sign and the office accepts personal deliveries.
    • Apartments and offices with a front desk: confirm that someone 21 or older is allowed and available to accept an alcohol shipment and show ID.

When to order wine gifts for the holidays

For Christmas gifts, late November or early December is a conservative planning target, not a guaranteed cutoff. Sellers need time to process orders, carriers are slammed in December, and winter storms can add days to ground shipping. Wine Access, for example, says most orders ship 2 to 14 days after they’re placed. Check the seller’s holiday deadlines and delivery estimate before you order, and choose faster shipping or an e-gift card if you’re cutting it close.

Temperature matters too. Wine can be damaged by freezing or overheating in transit, so look for a seller that offers weather holds and protective packaging. Wine Access can hold wine in its climate-controlled warehouse until the weather is safe, and it offers temperature-control packaging for $12, free on orders of $300 or more.

    Holiday wine gift planning timeline

These are planning suggestions, not delivery guarantees. Always check the seller’s current deadlines.

    • Early November: best time for gift subscriptions and corporate gifts
    • Late November: ideal for bottles shipped by ground
    • First week of December: a safer window for ground shipping
    • Mid-December: pay for faster shipping or send a gift card
    • Christmas Eve: an e-gift card can still go out by email

Other easy ways to give wine

    Gift a wine club membership

A wine club gift keeps arriving long after the holidays. With a Wine Access gift subscription, you choose the club, write a gift note of up to 250 characters, and pick the day the recipient is notified by email, up to 12 weeks out. Shipping within the continental U.S. is included. Review the total and tax at checkout. Both giver and recipient must be 21 or older, and the recipient has 6 months to accept and create a free account.

Gift subscription eligibility differs from regular wine orders. They aren’t available to residents of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Michigan, Mississippi, or Utah, so check the club’s terms before you buy.

Not sure which club to pick? Our Wine Access review compares club options, pricing, and how the service works.

    Gift a Wine Access club

    Send an e-gift card

A Wine Access e-gift card is the fastest wine gift there is. It’s delivered by email, can be loaded with $10 to $2,000, and has no expiration date, though a $1 monthly service fee applies after three years of inactivity. The recipient picks their own bottles and delivery date, so you don’t have to guess their taste. Gift cards can’t be used to buy a gift subscription or another gift card.

A gift card doesn’t get around shipping rules. Wine Access gift cards aren’t available in Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, or Utah, and the recipient’s wine delivery will still need a 21-plus signature.

Bundle bottles to save on shipping

Sending to someone who loves wine? Two or three bottles in one order often makes more sense than one. Wine Access offers free ground shipping on orders of $150 or more (Alaska and Hawaii excluded), so a small collection can ship for free.

    Hand-deliver it

If you’ll see them in person, bring the bottle yourself. Tuck it into a gift bag with a pairing, like a tin from our shortbread care package or one of our DIY Christmas gifts in a mason jar. For more pairing ideas, see our guide to building a healthy gift basket.

The most thoughtful wine gift is the one that actually arrives. Pick a licensed seller, plan for the signature, and order early.

How to send wine as a gift: FAQs

Can I mail a bottle of wine through USPS?

No. Federal law makes alcoholic beverages nonmailable through the U.S. Postal Service, and that includes wine.

Can I ship wine to someone with UPS or FedEx?

Not as an individual. UPS and FedEx only accept wine from licensed businesses with an approved alcohol shipping agreement. Instead, buy from a wine shop or winery authorized to ship to your recipient’s address.

Do you have to be 21 to receive wine?

Yes. An adult 21 or older must sign for the delivery and may need to show a government-issued photo ID.

Can you ship wine to every state?

No. Rules vary by state, and Utah bans direct-to-consumer wine shipping. Many retailers also skip a handful of other states. Wine Access, for example, doesn’t ship to Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, Mississippi, or Utah.

How far ahead should I order wine for Christmas?

Late November or early December is a good planning target for ground shipping, but check the seller’s holiday deadlines. After mid-December, choose faster shipping or send an e-gift card.

What if I don’t know what wine they like?

Send an e-gift card or a wine club membership, or choose a crowd-pleasing style like Brut Champagne. See our best wine for gift giving guide for picks by personality.

Send your wine gift with confidence

Sending wine is easy once you know the rules. Pick the right seller, plan the timing, and add a note and a pairing, and your gift will be the one they remember. If the bottle doesn’t get finished in one night, share our guide on how long Champagne lasts once opened.
