“Wine is sunlight, held together by water.” – Galileo Galilei

For the epicurean, France is the motherland—a place where good food and wine are celebrated if not revered, and where chefs who create culinary masterpieces are idolized like rock stars. Beyond the wine and food, it’s the history and culture on full display, revealed through its UNESCO heritage old towns and landscapes. France can be explored in many ways—by car, by train—but there is a distinct intimacy in following its rivers, drifting from one captivating destination to the next. Yes, you can charter a boat or perhaps take a river cruise, but going at your own pace with your own rented boat offers the freedom to savour these scrumptious places on your own schedule. And that’s just what you’ll get with Le Boat.

This April, Le Boat just created the gold standard of what it means to charter your own boat and explore Europe’s waterways with the introduction of its cutting-edge  Liberty boat line. Liberty is, quite literally, a floating apartment, with design and décor found in the finest French pied-à-terre.  Paired with a journey through some of France’s most enticing regions, it offers an experience of culinary delight and cultural discovery that is nothing short of nirvana for food lovers, curious travellers, and boating enthusiasts alike.

    What is Le Boat

Le Boat Managing Director Cheryl Brown and team launch the Liberty

Founded in 1964, Le Boat has spent nearly six decades perfecting the art of self-drive boating holidays. Over the years, it has grown from a small fleet navigating France’s canals into an international company offering journeys across Europe and North America.

France remains at the heart of Le Boat’s offerings, where waterways like the Canal du Midi invite travellers to drift through and explore medieval fortresses and vineyards that have nurtured generations of winemakers. Beyond France, Le Boat’s itineraries unfold across Italy’s Venice and Fruili wine region, England’s regal history along the Thames, Scotland’s rugged Caledonian Canal, Germany’s storied Rhine and Elbe, and the canals and waterways of the Netherlands and Ireland. Crossing the Atlantic, Le Boat opens up vast Canadian lakes and rivers for to explore is raw wilderness.

For nearly 60 years, Le Boat has cultivated a unique kind of travel—one that is unhurried, personal, and rooted in the pleasure of exploration at one’s own pace. This is the type of boating for a bespoke experience is shaped by your own curiosity and sense of adventure.

Le Boat invites travellers to experience Europe’s waterways in a way that blends freedom, discovery, and quiet immersion. Specialising in self-drive boating holidays, the company offers a fleet of vessels that open a unique window onto the continent’s rivers and canals, allowing guests to chart their own course without the need for a boating licence or fixed itinerary.

    River adventures with Le Boat

It’s not quite yachting—there’s no crew to steer the boat or attend to guests. Nor is it a traditional cruise, since the vessel is entirely private, with no other passengers and no fixed schedule to follow. It sits in that sweet spot: a boat exclusively for you and your group, with the freedom to chart your own course, pause whenever you choose, and linger as long as you wish.

For those new to boating, there’s no need for worry. This is the essence of slow travel, usually cruising gently at less than 10 knots along calm inland waterways. There’s no special license required, and before you set off, the Le Boat team takes clients thorough briefing and hands-on training to ensure you’re confident navigating the river.

    The liberty

The Liberty is Le Boat’s latest addition to its luxury fleet – a 11.23-meter (37-foot)  vessel with two thoughtfully appointed cabins, each featuring plush memory foam mattresses, and panoramic hull windows that frame the passing landscapes. The larger forward cabin offers an ensuite bathroom, while the second cabin is served by a separate bathroom.

The interiors are fitted for modern comfort, from the fully equipped kitchen with its built-in dishwasher and Nespresso® machine to the Smart TV and onboard Wi-Fi, making Liberty as well-suited to quiet nights in as it is to sun-soaked afternoons on the top deck. Air conditioning and heating ensure comfort no matter the season, while thoughtful touches like ample storage and smart design make every journey seamless.

But it’s Liberty’s outdoor spaces that truly capture the spirit of river travel. Three distinct seating areas invite you to linger – to grill fresh market produce on the top deck BBQ as the countryside glides by, or to stretch out on front-facing sun loungers with a glass of local wine, letting the light and air wash over you. A top deck drawer fridge keeps your refreshments close at hand, making it easy to savor the moment without ever needing to break the spell of the passing landscape.

Liberty is also offered through Le Boat’s Ownership Programme, which gives boating enthusiasts the chance to own this luxury model with added convenience. The programme includes a guaranteed 8% annual return for eight years and a 60% buyback option at the end of the term. Owners typically have access to around eight weeks of cruising each year across Le Boat’s 17 cruising regions in Europe and Canada. Meanwhile, Le Boat takes care of maintenance, mooring, and other operational responsibilities.

With Liberty, Le Boat has redefined the art of inland cruising, blending the freedom of self-guided travel with the comforts of a well-appointed pied-à-terre. It’s a vessel that invites you to drift through Europe’s storied landscapes on your own terms, pausing for a vineyard lunch or an impromptu stroll through a medieval town without the pressures of a set schedule. It’s about slowing down, savoring the journey, and rediscovering the simple pleasure of moving at your own pace—because sometimes, the best way to explore is to simply follow the river and see where it leads.
