NewsNation host Chris Cuomo said his brother, Andrew Cuomo, is a “tremendous operator within government,” but is “not what Democrats want” after his network called a victory for democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race. (Watch the video below.)
Cuomo, who co-anchored Tuesday’s election coverage, addressed the inevitable as his network announced Mamdani’s insurmountable lead against the ex-New York governor.
“Of course, I wanted my brother to win,” Chris Cuomo said. “I believe in my brother. I think he’s a tremendous operator within government. But he’s not what Democrats want right now in their party. And Democrats win in New York City… I mean, that’s the one-line analysis is, the Democrat was gonna win in New York City.”
The anchor allowed that Mamdani’s lead at the time, if it were to hold, “answers the question of the mandate.”
He added, “The type of Democrat and what they want, I do believe, there’s a metaphor here as a reaction to MAGA, and this is what we’ll see in the midterms.”
Chris Cuomo was fired by CNN in 2021 over his role in helping his brother’s defense against the sexual misconduct claims.
