The GEL-NIMBUS are something of an icon when it comes to running shoes, which is why Alison Izzo wanted to take the latest iteration from ASICS for a spin.
If you have been running for a while, you’ve probably bought your fair share of running shoes. So you’re probably aware that ASICS’ GEL-NIMBUS is a bit of an icon in the category.
If you haven’t, and you’re not, but need a new pair of running shoes, lean in.

What is the ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 24, any way?
The GEL-NIMBUS is reportedly the Japanese brand’s most popular style – and with good reason. It’s a classic. Super cushioned and super stable, it’s a great everyday running shoe and is especially good for longer runs when you want to stay comfortable – right up until that final kilometre.
But the old girl has had something of an update – with the latest iteration, the GEL-NIMBUS 24 receiving quite the upgrade.
How do they differ to the GEL-NIMBUS 23?
While still serving up lots of comfy cushioning, the 24 feels a lot ‘springier’ and a more responsive when you speed up, which is thanks to the new inclusion of something called Flyte Foam Blast+ midsole, which is more flexible therefore feels a bit more ‘energetic’. According to ASICS, (via Running Shoes Guru) “this new foam is 15% lighter, 15% softer and 12% bouncier than [ASICS’] Novablast 2’s FF Blast foam which is already very bouncy.”
The tongue is also thinner and less padded, making the profile more modern but it also means the foot hold is better, and the fit feels snug – but breathable. A bit like a good pair of leggings.
What does running in the GEL-NIMBUS 24 feel like?
I’ve tried a lot of trainers out in the name of work (perk of the job), but also because I run two to three times a week, and my first run in the ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 24 felt like I was running on a big bouncy – but firm – gymnastics mat. They were more cushioned and softer-feeling than my usual ‘racing’ running shoes, but still springy enough to inspire me to try my sprint splits (which I honestly dread).
They’re also lighter than many of the more ‘supportive’ running shoes, and weigh in at 20 grams less than the GEL-NIMBUS 23 – weighing in at 290 grams – so the shoes feels light to wear, even after 10-plus Ks.
Would I recommend the GEL-NIMBUS 24?
On my next run day, I was meant to punch out a 12 kilometre run (I’m in training for the upcoming Sydney City2Surf race) and was about to ditch it until I remembered I had the GEL-NIMBUS 24 sitting at my front door, waiting for me. Not to sound cheesy, but genuinely the thought of a comfy pair of runners that could literally put a spring in my step – even over that distance – made me do an about-face and put them on, and get out the door.
I wont’t lie, it wasn’t my best run and I still felt sluggish, but having a decent pair of running shoes that I knew were up to task – for me – was the difference between doing my training run and feeling good about it, and sitting on the couch. So I guess that’s a hard yes.
How much do the ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 24 cost?
The shoes are at the upper end of the price range for running shoes, but if you’re a dedicated runner who needs something soft and cushioned for a lot of long distance runs, they’re worth the spend.
They retail for $240 and you can buy them online at asics.com/au (and you get free express shipping when you spend over $99, and there’s 45 days to return them if they’re not your cup of tea).
