CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten highlighted JD Vance’s abysmal approval ratings on Monday and said “nobody’s buying” the vice president’s excuse for high gas prices.
Enten appeared on “News Central” Monday with host John Berman, who played footage of Vance claiming on Saturday that former President Joe Biden, rather than Donald Trump’s costly Iran war, is to blame for skyrocketing fuel costs.
“I would just say, nobody’s buying that line of reasoning,” Enten said. “Americans think there’s a lack of reasoning in that argument. I mean, you could just see it right here. I mean, just take a look at JD Vance’s net favorability rating.”
Enten continued, “You go back to the beginning of his vice presidency, you could see it right there. He was 3 points above water. Hey, 3 points! You’re on the positive side of the ledger. But down he goes into Lake Erie, to use a nice body of water in his home state, to -15 points.”
“That’s a switcheroo, Johnny B., of 18 points in the wrong direction,” he told Berman.
Enten also noted that Vance’s “net favorability among independents has gone from about 0 — which ain’t too great but ain’t too awful — to now about -30 points with independents, going the wrong way.”
Enten cited his own aggregate and data from “various pollsters” to conclude that Vance is currently “by far, the least popular Republican vice president at this point in a vice presidency,” noting that even Dan Quayle was perceived more favorably.
“Surely he’s doing well in his home state of Ohio?” Berman asked.
“You know what, maybe you could say, ‘Yeah … surely you could send him to Ohio,’” said Enten. “Look at this, look at JD Vance’s net favorability in Ohio: He’s now even underwater there. Seven points underwater in his home state of Ohio. He’s deep under the Ohio River.”
He noted, “He, simply put, is not helpful nationally, and he’s not even helpful in his own home state.”
