A faithful fatigue silhouette in thick 100% cotton, marked down from $24. I paid full price to find out for you, and I’d do it again.

A few weeks ago somebody on Reddit mentioned that Walmart, of all places, was selling a vintage-inspired military-style fatigue pant that looked suspiciously legit.

I did the only responsible thing: added a pair to my next order, sight unseen, to find out if they were worth telling you about. (I was already ordering groceries through Walmart+, so the pants just hopped in the cart.)

I’ve been meaning to add a properly loose pair to the rotation for a while, a fit with some actual swing in the leg the way the originals had, which, if you’ve tried shopping for this style at a normal-person price lately, you know is somehow a big ask.

The pair that showed up were better than I expected: good, solid quality (especially given what Target’s chinos feel like right now), probably on par with Gap circa 2017.

I paid full price, and my plan was to write them up as a solid deal at that price, because they are. Then “write about the Walmart pants” sat on my to-do list for two weeks, and by the time I finally opened the listing back up they’d been marked down to about $10.

Which, as far as I’m concerned, is my poor planning working out for everybody.

Where the fatigue pant comes from

The pant in question is a riff on the OG-107, the U.S. Army’s utility trouser from 1952 until the mid-70s, when the all-cotton original gave way to the poly-blend OG-507.

It’s the pant of the Korea and Vietnam era, the one in every MASH episode: olive drab cotton sateen (a smooth, dense weave with a faint sheen), with big patch pockets up front and button-through flap pockets on the seat.

Dense but breathable, and like a good pair of jeans, gets better with age.

Two details matter for my purposes.

First, the fit. The originals generally ran fuller than modern pants, most commonly with a higher rise and a boxy top block, though vintage pairs vary about as much as old Levi’s 501s do. Roomy in a way that would’ve felt like a costume to me several years ago and now, with fits swinging fuller across the board, feels right.

Second, thanks to TikTok et al. the real things have become a vintage-market darling, which means faithful repros from heritage brands now run $80 and up

Affordable “utility pants” aren’t impossible to find, but nearly all of them are tapered, athletic fit, or cut with stretch or hiking pant material. Which, to be fair, is probably what most guys actually want.

But if the reason you want a fatigue pant is that loose, straight, vintage fit, the slimmed-down versions miss it.

A similar but slimmer pair I’ve had for years from Amazon

I know because I own a pair: athletic fit utility pants from Amazon that served me well for years and were exactly the width I wanted when I bought them. As my fit preferences have gotten more relaxed, though, that narrow leg opening kept feeling less like what I was reaching for, and I could never quite justify $90 and up to find out whether I’d even like the loose version when the current ones still worked.

    The $10 version

Free Assembly’s Straight Fit Cotton Utility Pant gets the important parts right.

The fabric is a thick, textured 100% cotton, closer to a canvas than the sateen of the originals, with a genuinely satisfying amount of body to it.

The leg is a true straight with room through the thigh and calf, the front pockets are the big utility patch style, and the back pockets button through (but sans flap however), the way they’re supposed to.

I’ve been wearing mine constantly since they arrived.

One honest limitation: the rise is medium, not the higher rise of the vintage pair. I sized up trying to wear them higher on the waist, and with a belt it kind of works, but sizing up isn’t a real substitute for a true high rise.

For fit I’d err one size up in the waist, length runs true to size, and if you’re between sizes or just not sure, do what I did, order both, keep the winner, and let Walmart’s free 90-day returns eat the difference. (I still need to drop mine off.)

The Military Olive is the color on clearance and most sizes are still in stock as of this writing. The Wheat version is already sold out, which tells you how this ends.
