“I’ll share a funny story: when South Africa was hosting the Soccer World Cup in 2010, I was at a conference in Canada. Because there were a lot of international attendees and a big time difference, lots of people were watching games online. One day, a colleague had a game on and a group of us were standing nearby. The game was taking place at night in Bloemfontein. I commented that I didn’t envy the spectators in the weather. A woman (North American of some kind), said: ‘Oh, because it’s so hot?’ The people on the screen were wearing thick coats and woolly hats, and their breath was steaming. It was obviously very cold. So I said: ‘No, because of the cold.’ I then explained that if it’s summer here (Canada), then it’s winter there (South Africa) due to the earth being round and so forth.”
