From Caregiving to the Camera: Erika Longo’s Inspiring Path to Success

In the unpredictable world of acting, where every audition feels like a battle and success can seem distant, one question lingers: What sets a rising star apart? Is it raw talent that grabs attention, or is it something deeper — the preparation, passion, and persistence that truly define a lasting career?

New Jersey’s own Erika Longo is living proof that it’s the latter. With unwavering determination, Longo is carving a path in an industry where success is anything but guaranteed. Recently, she spoke with Social Lifestyle Magazine, sharing her journey on screen and her deeply personal role behind the scenes as a caregiver — an experience that inspired Lina, a powerful short film exploring three generations of women grappling with the impact of their matriarch’s advancing illness.

“Lina was my way of honoring my grandma’s memory,” Longo shared. “My grandmother, Carmelina D’Agostino, who I called Nonna or Nonnie, was a big part of my life until she passed away several years ago. She was my maternal grandmother and the only grandparent I had growing up. She was born and raised in Salerno, Italy, but left the country with her new husband shortly after WWII, hoping to create a better life in America.”

Longo continued, “She lost two husbands and became a widow for the second time when my mother was only seven years old. She remained single and raised my mom and aunt on her own. She was an amazing cook, and some of my fondest memories are of her babysitting me. We’d walk to the library, where she’d check out one of her favorite romance novels, watch The Price is Right or As The World Turns, and feed the geese on our way to Corrado’s, a local food store in Clifton, NJ.”

Longo’s career is on the rise, with a recurring role on Law & Order: SVU, where she plays EMT Donna L., showcasing her versatility and depth as an actress. Additional credits include: East New York, FBI: Most Wanted, and The Endgame.

Recognizing the challenges of acting, Longo offers candid advice to aspiring actors: “It’s a wild and tough industry at times. There are so many things that are out of your control in this business. Stay sharp, do the work for every audition, study the craft, and make strong choices so you feel ready when an opportunity presents itself.”

Her journey also highlights the barriers women face in the film industry, and she encourages others to take the leap into filmmaking. “If it’s your passion, go for it! Lina was my first short film, and it was a very fulfilling but also challenging experience.”

To bring Lina to life, Longo and her team successfully crowdfunded for 30 days, covering most of the budget and collaborating with a talented crew led by director Liz Manashil. “Lina is a story that focuses on three generations of women, and having a mostly female crew felt like a supportive experience — it just felt right.”

In addition to her other work, Erika launched Midtown Self Tapes in Manhattan — a go-to spot for actors who need professional self tape auditions.Erika also provides coaching as well for actors who want to dive a little deeper. She loves meeting and working with so many wonderful actors and artists at every stage in their careers. From Broadway actors to series regulars, people just starting to learn the craft, and everything in between, she is truly grateful to be able to do something she enjoys so much everyday.

Longo’s passion for storytelling and appreciation for teamwork are clear in everything she does. “Being on set feels like being a kid in a candy store—it truly takes a village and it never fails to fascinate me.”

For aspiring actors, Erika Longo stands as proof that talent, perseverance, and authenticity can turn dreams into reality. At Social Lifestyle Magazine, we’re proud to share her inspiring story and excited to follow her journey on and off-screen.
