Franck Muller: The Vanguard Slim Sfumato and Galet approach elegance from different directions, pairing distinctive case architecture with considered surface treatments and precise Swiss watchmaking

    Franck Muller Vanguard Slim Sfumato

Franck Muller’s design language has long been closely associated with expressive shapes, curved cases and dials that carry a strong visual identity. Two of its creations, the Vanguard Slim Sfumato and the Galet, explore that identity through markedly different ideas. One draws on the layered tonal effects of Renaissance painting and the technical challenge of reducing thickness. The other looks to the quiet geometry of a pebble shaped gradually by water.

Together, they reveal how proportion, colour, finishing and movement architecture can change the character of a watch without abandoning the codes of the manufacture.

    A softer Vanguard

The Vanguard Slim Sfumato brings a more restrained profile to one of Franck Muller’s most recognisable case forms.

Its name refers to sfumato, the Renaissance painting technique in which tones and colours transition gradually into one another without sharply defined boundaries. On the watch, that idea is translated onto the dial through a subtle tone-on-tone gradation. The resulting surface gains visual depth without relying on elaborate ornamentation.

Sunray brushing adds another dimension, allowing the appearance of the dial to shift as light moves across it. Multiple layers of lacquer and protective varnish contribute to the finish, reinforcing the sense of gradual tonal transition that gives the collection its name.

The familiar Vanguard tonneau form remains, but its proportions have been reconsidered. A slimmer case changes the way the watch sits on the wrist and softens some of the visual weight traditionally associated with the collection. Brown inserts along the sides of the rose-gold case introduce a further material contrast while retaining the flowing architecture of the Vanguard silhouette.

Achieving the thinner profile also required attention beneath the dial. The watch uses an automatic movement developed and manufactured in-house by Franck Muller, allowing the movement architecture itself to contribute to the reduced overall thickness.

The display remains clear and balanced, with hours and minutes accompanied by a small-seconds indication positioned at six o’clock. The subsidiary seconds display introduces movement to the dial while preserving its symmetry.

An open caseback reveals the mechanical construction and the decorative work applied to the movement. Traditional finishing techniques include Côtes de Genève across bridges and plates, perlage on the main plate, bevelled components, diamond-polished edges, satin-brushed surfaces and circular finishing on selected wheels and components.

These details form part of the broader vocabulary of fine Swiss movement finishing. Some are immediately visible, while others exist primarily for the watchmaker and collector to discover when examining the movement more closely.

The case and buckle are also set by hand with brilliant-cut diamonds. Rather than becoming the central design theme, the stones follow the existing geometry of the case, adding light to the slimmed-down Vanguard structure. A leather strap is integrated closely with the case, maintaining continuity between the watch head and the wrist.

Galet and the geometry of nature

Where the Vanguard Slim Sfumato studies colour and mechanical thinness, the Galet begins with shape.

“Galet” is the French word for pebble, and the case takes inspiration from stones gradually rounded by the movement of water. The concept appears in gentle corners, smooth transitions and softened surfaces that give the watch a distinctly organic quality.

Its rose-gold case avoids aggressive geometry. Instead, the edges flow into one another, creating a silhouette that feels closer to an object shaped naturally over time.

That sense of calm continues onto the dial.

A stamped guilloché pattern introduces texture, while a sun-inspired motif creates movement across the surface as lighting conditions change. Arabic numerals provide the principal points of reference, with raised, mirror-polished details introducing a measured contrast against the patterned background.

The composition is deliberately straightforward, displaying hours and minutes through a quartz movement. The technical simplicity places greater emphasis on the relationship between the case, dial, numerals and surface decoration.

Diamonds are hand-set into the case and buckle, while an alligator strap continues the more classical character of the piece. The use of rose gold brings warmth to the design and works particularly well with the curved architecture of the Galet case.

Movement decoration includes Côtes de Genève and sunray brushing on the casing ring, linking even a quartz-powered creation to the decorative traditions associated with mechanical watchmaking.

    Finishing beyond the visible surface

Both watches also illustrate the importance Franck Muller places on finishing as part of construction.

Across its manufacture, traditional decorative techniques range from engraving and perlage to satin brushing, circular graining, snailing, diamond polishing and hand-executed beveling. Each creates a different interaction between metal and light.

Côtes de Genève produces the familiar parallel wave pattern seen across bridges and plates. Perlage uses overlapping circular marks to texture larger surfaces. Satin brushing creates fine, controlled lines, while sunray finishing radiates outward from a central point. Diamond polishing is used on selected edges to produce a highly reflective surface.

    Franck Muller Galet

Chamfering serves both visual and practical purposes. By carefully removing and polishing the sharp meeting point between two surfaces, the watchmaker creates cleaner transitions while eliminating vulnerable edges.

These techniques may occupy only a few millimetres of a component, yet collectively they determine how refined a movement appears under close inspection.

    Two readings of restraint

The Vanguard Slim Sfumato and Galet arrive at a similar sense of refinement through very different routes.

The Vanguard is architectural and contemporary, using a thinner mechanical construction and gradual colour transitions to reinterpret an established Franck Muller form. The Galet is more organic, allowing rounded geometry and a quieter dial composition to define its personality.

One takes its inspiration from painting, the other from nature. One places mechanical thinness at the centre of its design, while the other concentrates on softness of form. What connects them is an attention to proportion and surface. In both watches, elegance comes through the relationship between shape, finishing, material and the way light travels across them. That makes each piece a different study in how watch design can create character long before the movement of the hands becomes the focus.
