Elizabeth Holmes may be leaving prison early.
Ms. Holmes, the founder of the blood-testing start-up Theranos, who was convicted of fraud in 2022 and sentenced to 11 years behind bars, has been approved for transfer to a halfway house next August, according to copies of a Sept. 22 letter sent to victims of her crime from a unit manager within the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The letter was viewed by The New York Times.
Ms. Holmes, 42, is expected to transfer from F.P.C. Bryan, a minimum-security federal prison camp for women roughly 90 minutes northwest of Houston where she began her sentence in May 2023. She will move to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, on Aug. 23, 2027, according to the letter.

It is unclear what prompted the transfer or how long Ms. Holmes may stay at the halfway house. The letter indicated that her scheduled release date is Feb. 22, 2030, though most prisoners stay in halfway houses only for a short time. Ms. Holmes’s sentence was already shortened several times. Last year, she filed a request to have her sentence commuted by the Department of Justice.
F.P.C. Bryan did not respond to a request for comment.
Ms. Holmes has been back in the spotlight in recent weeks with the upcoming release of a documentary directed by Nathan Fielder, a comedian, and Lance Oppenheim, called “You Can See Everything.”
Mr. Fielder spent time with Ms. Holmes and her partner, the tech worker Billy Evans, in the weeks before she reported to prison, keeping the project a secret until recently. The film’s distributor, A24, described the movie as “an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon” that became “a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss.” It is set to be released on Oct. 16.
Mr. Evans declined to comment.
Ms. Holmes has also become active on social media while in prison, posting about artificial intelligence, longevity and the health care system and making the unfounded claim that Theranos’s technology worked. Her account describes her posts as “mostly my words, posted by others.”
